Kaleidosphere Recordings: Mentoring And Transforming Talent In EDM Scene By: Lynette Carrington A new music label has arrived and electronic dance music (EDM) will never be the same. With a team of elite music forces at the helm, Kaleidosphere is positioning itself to provide amazing music, while at the same time providing tour support, production, in-house music supervision, PR and a wealth of connections and industry knowledge to its artists. Sara Cooper and Gardner Cole are the owners of the Kaleidosphere.1378341_1395353237366011_1323147456_n“Sara Cooper has been in EDM PR for 15 years, so she’s been around since it was tiny and has watched this thing explode,” Cole explained. “She works with Carl Cox, Matador, Hobo and the Electric Festival in Aruba. She’s got an extensive history in EDM and a mutual friend decided he wanted to do a label and he wanted to bring us together to run it for him. So he put in the money and we’re putting in the expertise. We launched in late October, so it’s very new and we’ll focus on EDM.” The EDM world is similar to the way the European music market was back in the ‘80’s. Everything was single-disc. “In Europe you would put out a single and if that single did well, the labels would give you a full album deal. It was a smart way of doing business,” noted Cole. “Instead of spending all that money, which is wasteful, we’re going to do six song compilation releases featuring six different artists. We’ll throw it out to the DJ’s and see what generates interest and then those particular artists that get legs underneath them, we’ll support them with tour support, marketing and recording money. It’s going to be an old-school approach, in that Kaleidosphere is going to develop artists from the ground up.” Gardner_08_1267920546 Musician and Producer, Gardner Cole of Kaleidosphere Records Cole is also interested in taking artists and showing them the nuts and bolts of the music industry in a mentoring role. He wants to see people find a home at Kaleidosphere, a label that truly cares about the artists. “There’s room for a compassionate label. That’s our mission statement. It’s about the music. If we can make some money at it, that’s great, but we all want to put out music that we’re proud of and find artists that are appreciative to get someone that believes in them,” stated Cole. “We are currently courting a group out of the UK and another group out of South Africa. We are looking for talent locally, too. I’m looking for really talented singers that I can feature,” Cole noted. He recognizes that EDM music today is very similar to ‘80’s style music. “This is basically ‘80’s music and that’s the sweet spot. I want to take ‘80’s style songs and get guest vocalists and see if we can get a hit with someone.” Kaleidosphere will also have an A&R (Artists and Repertoire) division focused on developing new artists. This is something that record labels used to have some years back. With more than 50 international #1 hits, 139 international platinum awards and 17 international gold awards, Gardner Cole was born to a family of musicians and grew up in the Motown area. As he grew, he essentially became a one-man-band learning drums at age 3, piano at age 5, guitar at 8 and bass guitar at 9. At the young age of 14, he was an active member of three different bands playing three different styles of music on three different instruments. He then went on to one his production skills and has been working professionally in the music industry ever since. He previously spent 15 years as a staff writer for Warner Brothers and recorded over 350 songs (including 11 Billboard charting singles) for major labels including Universal, Hollywood, Sony, CBS, A&M, MCA, Chrysalis, Virgin, Interscope, Dreamworks, Capitol, E.M.I., Warner Brothers, Polygram and Motown. He also performed with various bands, including drumming with the English group ABC and as a keyboardist with 80’s mega-group A-HA. “In 1986, I had seven Billboard charting singles, which is a really hard thing to do,” Cole stated of his ‘80’s heyday. Madonna in her video for “Open Your Heart”, penned by Gardner Cole. (Video directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino and produced by David Naylor.) “Well, obviously, writing a #1 hit for Madonna (Open Your Heart) was pretty much a game-changer for me. That kicked down a lot of doors,” Cole stated. “Also having songs selling 100 million units worldwide is also a milestone probably not going to be doable in the future because sales are not what they were in the ‘80’s. I don’t think anyone coming up is going to hit that milestone in their career. I’m kind of at the end of that period of being able to achieve that.” In their new endeavor at Kaleidosphere, fans will be offered a cool selection of original and well-produced EDM music and artists will gain from the industry and life experiences from two industry veterans.
