Kalpana Chakma case date extended A Rangamati court has extended the deadline for submission of the probe report on the abduction of Kalpana Chakma by a month. Senior judicial magistrate of Rangamati District Sessions Judge Court Md Rokon Uddin Kabir passed the order on Thursday in response to a petition for extension of time. The petition was submitted by Kotong police inspector Md Abul Kalam on behalf of Rangamati Police Super Amena Begum, also the investigating officer in the case. The probe report should be submitted on November 25, said the judge. Kalpana, president of Hill Women’s Federation, remains missing after she was picked by army officials from her own residence in Baghaichhari on the night of June 12, 1996. The abductee’s elder brother Kalindi Kumar Chakma filed an abduction case with Baghaichhari police station the following day. Hill organisations and the plaintiff have accused Lt Ferdous and three VDP officials of kidnapping Kalpana for long. Several investigation reports have been submitted in the last 18 years but none contained the four names, causing the plaintiff to repeatedly submit no-confidence petitions. On January 12 last year, CID submitted a probe report to Rangamati Chief Judicial Magistrate Court but the plaintiff filed a no-confidence petition again and demanded judicial probe into the case. The court on January 16 ordered the Rangamati police super to carry out a fresh investigation. Source: Dhaka Tribune
