When a mother holds her baby to her bare skin, it can help the infant regulate their temperature, regulate breathing and heartrate, help the infant with weight gain and tolerating feeds, and help the infant and mother bond, in the hospital setting. Having a baby in the NICU can put a great deal of stress on a family, and interfere with the natural bonding process a mother and infant can have.
