Kansas delegates return from NEA representative assembly energized. Denver, CO- Delegates chosen by fellow members of the Kansas National Education Association, returned from Denver last week where they represented Kansas at the National Education Association annual Representative Assembly. NEAs annual meeting takes place during the final week of June and/or the first week of July. Various committees, constituencies, caucuses, leadership groups, and delegates from state and local affiliates gather to set policy and chart the direction of NEA business. The RA consists of nearly 9,000 delegates representing educators, student members, retired members, and other segments of the united education profession. The NEA Representative Assembly has been described as the world’s largest democratic deliberative assembly. Locally, KNEA delegates representing Pony Express UniServ met to caucus with other delegates from throughout the state. With so many educational advocacy issues present in Kansas currently, delegates were engaged and action-oriented. KNEA delegates reaffirmed their commitment to further the mission of the association to make public schools great for every child. Taking a cue from Kansas legislator Ray Merrick, delegates had some good-natured fun dressing up as British “redcoats” metaphorically in order to illustrate the focused policy attacks teachers endure in Kansas. Merrick recently commented on concerns over “a lot of redshirts” in the statehouse like those worn by KNEA members during April demonstrations. Merrick later retracted his comments to mean revolutionary war era redcoats. Local KNEA delegates took part in honoring education advocates, meetings, and policy planning including the following highlights: ● 2014 Human & Civil Rights award winner from Topeka, Kansas, Mr. Jack Hishmeh a student from Topeka High School received the SuAnne Big Crow Memorial Award for his efforts developing programs for including special needs students in everyday student life activities. nea.org/assets/docs/HE/Jack_Hishmeh_HCR_2014_Award_Winner_Bio_Sheet.pdf ● Delegates passed a new business item on July 4 calling for U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s resignation. ● Named 15-year-old Malala Yousafzai, 2014 Friend of Education recipient. nea.org/grants/59660.htm ● Delegates vote for all-minority, all-female, officer team to head nations largest union led by President Elect Lily Eskelsen García. nea.org/grants/59617.htm ● NEA leaders challenged all public education stakeholders to step-up, take action and promote public education.
