Kansas is the center of the country. It started as a true bastion of freedom and racial equality. Lawrence, the home of the University of Kansas, was founded by abolitionists from New England in 1854, the same year the Republican Party was formed, guided by these same abolitionist beliefs in freedom and equality for all human beings. But for decades, Kansas has drifted farther and farther to the right along with the GOP in general. Now, through legislation sponsored by ALEC (Through the corporate-funded American Legislative Exchange Council, global corporations and state politicians vote behind closed doors to try to rewrite state laws that govern your rights. These so-called model bills reach into almost every area of American life and often directly benefit huge corporations.--ALEC Exposed), Kansas is ordering local and state government entities to stop helping fund Broadband Internet access to anyone under their jurisdictions. Not only is this allowing the expansion of private corporate Internet Provider monopolies, it is another way to dummy up the people by allowing the poorest among them and a huge slice of rural communities very limited information and communication sources. It hurts the process of educating the children of Kansas and even its own small business community. Its really reactionary, and its really insane.
