Kanuma ....the festival of cattle! Cattle, specifically cows have a good representational situation in the Hindu society. Kanuma is the major festival for considering the importance of these animals in the nourishment and development of the society. Obviously, Kanuma Panduga is basically known as Kanuma, is an event which is very intimate to the hearts of farmers because it is the authorised day for especially praying and showcasing their cattle with honor. Cattles are the symbolic indication of sign of prosperity in many agrarian societies apart from the utilitarian features of tilling and production of milk which they serve and give respectively. Kanuma forms part of the three day event called Sankranti festival, each and every day having its very own importance. Kanuma falls on the third day of Pongal (Tamil and Malayalam) and is generally known as Mattu Pongal in Southern India and in Andhra it is called as Mukkanuma. Union of families take place during the Sankranti event and specifically, sons-in-law holiday with their wife’s families. Subsequent to the beginning warm up with the bonfire of Bhogi ,the first day of Sankranti, which is followed by new dresses and delicious meals on the second day of Sankranti. Kanuma is the day for showcasing the gaming and betting talents. Duly the demonstration starts with cattle. The most eye-catching feature of Kanuma is adorning the most excellent bulls and taking them for procession in the streets. Till now, the exercise of this ritual is performed and you can see frequently the most elegant bulls on the streets coming with sannai music. In olden times, this event is mainly considered for cockfights in which people bet and it sustained ahuge importance in the past. This habit of betting on cockfights led to enmity and jealousy among majestic families and consecutively followed by a big fight in the Palnadu region of Guntur district, called as Palnati Yudhdham ( the war of Palnadu). By matching it analogously with the Hindu epic of Mahabharata, this war is called as Andhra Mahabharatam.
