Karate Fallacy #1: Karate people cant fight because they pull their techniques which means they cant really hit properly in a fight. When a new student comes into the dojo they are trained with a heavy emphasis on control. They learn to focus on targeted vital areas but make very little contact. This stage typically lasts a bout 3 months then we begin training them to both understand how to deliver a hit and take a hit properly. Eventually they can strike hard when training and sparring but only after they have been conditioned to do so. This urban myth came as an exploit of so called self defense and reality combat people who had limited exposure to training began to promote their methods to drum up sales. It was further popularized by MMA sport fighters in an attempt to discredit Karate as being effective when in fact it is highly effective. The issue is that a beginner is not ready to receive the strikes at powerful levels so they are worked into it. There is nothing more dangerous to a person than missing a strike against a good fighter. That is why a beginning student will spend much of their first year training how, where and what to strike with before getting into full out sparring with heavy contact. The other reason is safety...if a student gets injured they cant train, if they cant train they cant get better...not to mention dealing with being injured is no fun. We train smart to prolong our ability to train forever. Those who just think it is cool to slug it out or go hard limit that ability heavily.
