Kashmir Thoughts Editorial ------ He failed to become Omer Mukhtar for Kashmir. Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, was he, a perpetrator or a hero. History has different perception about his achievements. He emerged as a great leader of Kashmir, but did he die as one who betrayed the public trust. As specified by some intellectuals of Jammu and Kashmir, Sheikh Abdullah turned up as a protagonist, but with the passage of time, he proved himself nothing more than an MLA. According to the historical account people of Kashmir used to follow him blindly, but now ideology has changed a great deal, he is no more a hero for todays generation rather most of Kashmiris blame him for whatever political trauma has happened in Kashmir valley. According to historians, Indian Army landed in Kashmir on 27th of October 1947 on the request of Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir and on the approval of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the then popular leader of J&K. Perhaps, until now Army has firmly rooted their presence in this part of the world. However, his son and nephew have a different idea, which they consider to be the history. Recently, Sheikh Nazir made a statement and according to which, neither Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah had any role in the accession nor any other NC member. Sheikh was in prison at the time of accession as the then Maharaja had arrested him for leading the movement against his autocratic rule. However, this history was rejected by some learned persons of Kashmir, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Even according to the official biography of Shiekh Abdullah (Atish-e-Chinar) Sheikh Nazirs expression of views seems to be based on imagination. Nevertheless, whatever the history reveals but one thing is evident that the people throughout the state considered him as the Omer Mukhtar of Kashmir, but regrettably, he could not live up to their expectations.
