Kate Fry in Hedda Gabler: This long-established leading lady in Chicago theater has been working only rarely in the last year, balancing career options with her growing family. One understands, but feels a sense of loss. Frys performance at Writers Theatre — emotionally intense, self-aware, wry, funny and endlessly compelling — is the embodiment of why shes such an asset. Henrik Ibsens famous anti-heroine is a role filled with traps, but Fry added a whole other level, forging a protofeminist woman who lived before her time and seemed all too aware of the confines of the man who created the character she was playing. It was as if Hedda Gabler was sick of having to stick to Hedda Gabler, and it all worked beautifully. chicagotribune/entertainment/theater/ct-best-performances-2014-20141223-column.html#page=1
