Kazakhstan’s Multi-Vector Foreign Policy in Action By Erlan Idrissov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Recent foreign policy developments, including top-level meetings and visits, have once again demonstrated the critical importance of Kazakhstan’s multi-vector foreign policy. Remaining true to the fundamental principles and values of this well-established doctrine is the only viable option for a country such as ours. While in The Hague to participate in the Nuclear Security Summit on March 24-25 (which, by the way, went extremely well for which we should give great credit to our Dutch hosts), President Nursultan Nazarbayev had a busy schedule and a very productive set of meetings. Beginning with his successful and fruitful bilateral visit to The Netherlands and his meetings with the hosts King Willem-Alexander and Prime Minister Mark Rutte, President Nazarbayev also had substantive and in-depth meetings with Presidents Xi Jinping of China, Barack Obama of the United States, François Hollande of France, Sauli Niinistö of Finland, Prime Ministers Shinzo Abe of Japan and David Cameron of the United Kingdom. He also met informally with many other leaders attending the Summit, which brought together more than 50 heads of state and government as well as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and IAEA Director General Yukia Amano. These meetings allowed us to advance our bilateral agenda and also discuss pressing issues on the international agenda with our partners, including the situation in and around Ukraine. The meetings followed a busy few weeks of diplomacy for the President, with phone calls and meetings with leaders including Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and others.
