[bit.ly/1jBOndp] To be set up by the middle of 2015, it will target women, first-generation permanent residents and new citizens, between the ages of 18 and 45 who are exempt from national service. Volunteers will be tasked with either defending key installations and crowd control at SAF-related events, or contribute their specialised expertise in their respective fields. Stressing that that the volunteer corps is to allow those without NS duties to contribute towards defending Singapore, Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen said that, “NS must be for a real and critical need to defend Singapore, neither tokenistic nor symbolic.”
