Keep Conservatives United, the brainchild of a top operative of former U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms political organization, got $75,000 from the Republican State Leadership Committee out of the $290,750 it reported receiving as of June 25. An RSLC affiliated group, the Republican Legislative Campaign Committee, was chaired last year by Sen. Berger and he joined the RLCCs executive committee earlier this year. The RLCC describes its mission as helping Republicans win state legislative and local races around the country. So the money goes from a committee whose purpose is to elect state officials to an organization that then spends it on a congressional race- the only race in the country that they get involved in. Shouldnt state level GOP elected officials be a little more than pissed that the money they raised to help state level candidates was given to an organization whose only purpose in this election cycle was to elect Phil Berger Jr. to a federal position? Did Phil Berger Sr. play a role in this? Mark Walker is right to ask these questions and win or lose, this story isnt going away.
