Keep Your Weapon Hand Free When I was in the police academy (Orange County Sheriffs Training Academy Class 104) we recruits were not allowed to carry anything in our weapon hand. I am right handed, and so I was never allowed to carry anything in my right hand. If a recruit was caught carrying even a piece of paper in his hand that recruit was immediately told, in a very unkind manner, Get down and give me twenty, and hed have to do twenty military style push-ups counting out loud, Sir, one, sir. Sir, two, sir. Sir, three, sir... By the time the 21 weeks had finished it was ingrained in me for a lifetime not to ever carry anything in my weapon hand. The reason we future law enforcement officers were taught that was so that we could instantly get to our firearm upon attack, and nothing would slow us down. When you are afraid your hands tighten. This is known as a sympathetic reflex. If you have something in your weapon hand at the moment of attack your hand will grip onto it tighter. You will have to force yourself to drop the object, and that means wasted time. Yet, if your weapon hand is free and clear your repetitious training (muscle memory) will go for the pistol grip of the firearm, and without thinking about youll find the front sight of the pistol will be locked onto the target. I graduated from the police academy on June 17, 1991 (thats coming up on 23 years ago), and to this very day I do not carry items in my right hand unless I absolutely have to. If I do have to carry something in my right hand I find that I am very uncomfortable. And, since I always have a weapon on me, even if it is an improvised weapon like a writing pen, I am always ready to deploy it. You need to start conditioning yourself today and make it habit. Theres not going to be anyone to correct you like I had, and so you will have to really concentrate on catching yourself if you have an item in your weapon hand. Be A Hard Target.
