Keep in mind that I am a professional program writer when reading this: Theres a time and a place for programming and theres a time and place for training instinctually. Im oftentimes asked about what set/rep scheme Im doing in a particular training session. I always have a plan, but sometimes you have to adapt. Sometimes you have to go outside your comfort zone. Sometimes one rep turns to five, five to ten, ten to twenty. There are times where I dont count. Would you rather achieve an arbitrary number or achieve a tangible goal? Training principles like phase potentiation and periodization are commonly accepted in the scientific field amongst the experts, but what really makes someone an expert? I feel that you cannot discount the importance of the fact that you know your body best. Combine evidence-based programming with your natural training intuition and youve got a deadly combination.
