Keep your eyes open for a new blog I will be writing on FB and on my website drshermak. It is called Because Breast Cancer Doesn’t Just Happen in October. I plan to post interesting news, interesting articles in the news, and clinical vignettes with inspiring personal stories I would like to share. I treat many patients with breast cancer and breast cancer genetic predisposition, women from their 30’s to their 80’s. This has been one of the most rewarding accomplishments of my career, taking care of women facing one of the most dramatic, frightening episodes of their lives. Many are frightened of what will happen during the therapeutic journey which I help to navigate with as much empathy, support and guidance as I can provide. The beauty about breast cancer reconstruction today is that we can really shoot for the moon with aesthetic outcomes. Many women look better than they did prior to their diagnosis and they give input about their desire for a particular look – their choice! One of my recent patients, a thin woman in her 60’s who had nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction with an anatomically shaped gel implant, had a close cancer margin abutting the spared nipple requiring removal of the nipple. This shortened her involved breast, and we discussed lifting the opposite breast to achieve a better proportionate match. In a 2- or 3 week postoperative visit, she pointed to the lifted breast, and said “25? I didn’t even look this good at 25.” These experiences make my day! So, more to come! I’m looking forward to communicating with everyone on this special topic that is near and dear to my heart! And I welcome input from you, questions, experiences your may want to share.
