Keeping up to date on the constantly evolving science behind conservation? Here is a recent article about a study, led by Neil Carter of Michigan State University, supported by the USFWS Rhinoceros and Tiger Conservation Fund: bit.ly/1AJoosi. The research project addresses the complex tiger-leopard-human relationship by incorporating unconventional methods to track the interactions between tigers, leopards and humans. In sum: Tigers are socially dominant to leopards, and since they prefer areas less disturbed by people, leopards are being displaced to areas closer to humans. Interestingly, leopards got around this and were able to avoid people by becoming more active at night, when less people were around. The findings will assist further conservation of both species and help prevent human-wildlife conflict.
