Kent Fungal Group links to the UK Clinical Mycology Network Through its association with the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust (EKHUFT) the Kent Fungal Group is now linked in to a major clinical network: the UK Clinical Mycology Network (UCMN). The Head of Service in Microbiology at EKHUFT (and Honorary Professor in the School) Professor Fritz Mühlschlegel has several collaborations with the Kent Fungal Group and his department, based at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, has the expertise and technology to deliver a reliable and accurate diagnostic fungal service that can reliably identify fungal infections in patients. The burden to health due to fungal diseases in the UK is considerable and invasive fungal infections are a major healthcare concern, with increasing incidence and a mortality rate exceeding 50%. This new link will provide members of the Kent Fungal Group with an opportunity to translate their scientific discoveries into the clinic and help combat this major health challenge.
