Kenyan teachers are threatening nationwide strikes. They earn so little they can scarcely afford a shack to live in and the country is 100,000 teachers short. This is a common situation in the Global South - yet the World Bank continues to blame teachers for the failure to reach Education For All (try googling for instance their document Making Schools Work, which features an African teacher asleep at his desk on the front cover). It would be interesting to see World Bank economists trying to teach a class of 100+ in a building with no facilities and no teaching materials, on virtually no pay - see how they get on . . .
