Kevin Lanni: I believe I have a solution. Firstly, I just want to say that I agree that all of the problems stated in this video are valid and do make current e-voting technology insecure/unreliable and, therefore, a bad idea. But I dont agree with the generic statement that e-voting is a bad idea. I think the idea of e-voting is an excellent one, however there needs to be a secure and reliable way to manage this. In other words, its not the idea thats bad, its the current implementation. I believe the solution to the problems described here is cryptographically-controlled ballots. Essentially what Im talking about here is exactly the same process as exchanging encrypted messages (e-mail, for example). Today we do that by using public key cryptography. Each of two parties exchanges public keys with the other in a secure way (the recommended way is by exchanging them in person, such as at a key-signing party, you then sign the other persons public key using your own private key—more info: goo.gl/movLCV). Then they can use the public keys to send encrypted messages to each other. So lets analyze each of the problems described and see how the public key cryptography model can be applied to solve them. Problem #1 – auditing the software and hardware. Essentially the root of the problem here is how do you ensure your vote is counted, not tampered-with, and remains anonymous? This is one reason why I believe e-voting can actually be a very good thing—if done properly (or a very bad thing when not done properly). Tom Scott correctly points out that when e-voting is done improperly, it takes just one individual to tamper with the ballots. If every ballot is encrypted and individually signed by the voter themselves, they cannot be tampered with. Tom does (ever-so-briefly) touch on cryptography, but he seems to only be considering encryption of the voting machine itself, or the... https://plus.google/110660431106384402083/posts/ht42psMSf7T
