Kevin Parcell - Imagine a world afforested and reforested wherever possible, and all the forest managed. What you have then is the foundation of a beautiful, sustainable future: atmospheric carbon returned to balance through sequestration in trees and soil, zero net carbon renewable fuel, renewable building material, permanent food resource, diverse habitat for all, natural air conditioner, employment, and beauty. This vid linked below hypothesizes that trees are communicating need to each other that is satisfied through the action of fungi. That could be. What we actually see in nature is that trees move carbon from the atmosphere into the soil where microbes convert the carbon into complex carbon compounds that serve as nutrients. So one trees carbon is part of the food of other plants, including those we eat. People and other animals (and some plants) contribute nitrogen to the system with our urine, which provides balance, otherwise the microbes exhaust the nitrogen in the soil and thats the end of the process. We can also manage pests, diversity and fire. Why havent we planted trees everywhere? Because financing for-profit businesses requires simple payback of investment within 3 to 10 years at most, but it takes 20-50 years to establish a forest system that delivers that kind of profit. The social enterprise model that Reconomy employs includes profit to people and planet, and takes a longer view.
