Key Achievements The following are achievements that were realized during the July-Sept 1. Conducted NFE Literacy, basic ICT literacy and LSBE training Classes for 350 youth under youth for change programme: 350 youth were trained on how adolescents can refrain themselves from all forms of violence, abuse and exploitation by providing them with the necessary knowledge/skills through Life skills based education (LSBE) sessions, these sessions empowers young people and it gives them a chance to positively learn from each other and it also equips them on how to improve their standard of living with a positive impact on humanity, more so it enhances their self-esteem and decision making, more so, they were given knowledge of how to tackle extremely complicated issues in their lives. Introduction of different concepts and terminologies of life kills, Values identities and how all these parameters influence our everyday lives, Roles of Young people in the community and Participation of young people were also taught, main skills covered included Self awareness, Self-esteem, Self control, conflict resolution and negotiation. For now they fully understand the importance of a peaceful and cohesive society. NFE classes was also an integral part of the training, they were taught on reading & writing, mathematics, science/health, Somali/English languages and Islamic studies, in addition ICT classes were also offered. The results of quarterly examination and assessment tests showed great improvement on NFE, LSBE and ICT. During the Eid holiday, the youth organized celebration event, where they invited their parents and other community members, they presented various plays and songs on peace, reconciliation and importance of working closely with the police for a peaceful and cohesive society, participants were also entartained on drama against violence, illegal migration and piracy, the message was on how the parents and government can help to address these perrenial problems. In addition the beneficiaries attended rehabilitation sessions, where they learned why peaceful environment is the prerequisite of all manner of development. Within the program PSA initiated a training for 45 youth among the beneficiaries who are among the most active members of their groups and clubs, in order to create a youth pool that will be role model to their peers and also teach their colleagues on the use of dialogue in solving problems and various issues in the society in regard to respect for human rights and dignity. On 21 September being the international day for peace and 08 Septmber international literacy days, the youth organized various plays and songs for the event. From September when schools were opened 200 youth have been transitioned to formal education they have been transfered to Salahudiin Primay and secondy school for formal education, Salahudiin Primay and secondy school in collabration with Ministry of education and PSA, we administered evaluation exam to the beneficiaries, where it was used ascertain the level of literacy of each single beneficiary, using the exam we categorised them from Class 1 to class 8 (four classes in morning & four classes in afternoon), 50 of the beneficiaries joined secondary school in the same school. PSA role will be to pay for the school fees to the school, do follow ups, provide mentorship clups, recreational activities, provision of refreshments, facilitate Life skills based education (LSBE) sessions and buy school uniforms for the students, because it one of the school rule for the students to be tidy in school uniform. 2. Conduction of Vocational Training for Adolescent aged between 16-18 yrs: PSA provided skill training to youth aged 16-18 years of age, In electricity class boys only were enrolled, this is as the result of Somali culture, where girls are not known to associate themselves with such kind of jobs, the job is considered manly, electricity class were taken through practical sessions in the Golden Power Company and they continued on their theory lessons, In Mobile Phone repair class, all are also male this is due to the fact that in Somali culture the job too is a male domain, they visited three Mobile repairing companies for practical lessons, the Computer training team finished their excel program printed manulas and distributed computer training team. More so PSA provided beneficiaries with life skills based education (LSBE) training with particular focus on life skills of understanding oneself and understanding others, also decision making skills were taught in addition to health issues sessions which comprises HIV/AIDS, reproductive health and Substance use, the objective was to raise awareness and combat the spread of HIV/AIDS. 3. Psychosocial training for the community members and families of the participants: PSA organized Psychosocial training for community members and families of the participants, 30 trainees received PSS skills to in order to be counselling the adolescents at risk, established of committee to be overseeing the adolescents after they receive psychosocial support was also done. During the sessions Parents were given a chance to bring forward various problems and challenges that are associated with their children and a remedy to each problem was suggested, this was away of improving parent-child relationship. Some of the report cases were children not listening to their parents, failure to finish various tasks given to them, failure to follow up instructions, Has difficulties in organizing tasks and activities, tendency of disliking particular task which require sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork or homework), losing items i.e. toys, books. The training facilitator (counsellor) underlined specific recommendations which have helped the parents alot. This has reduced Parental Stress by a bigger margin. 4. Psychosocial counseling for the beneficiaries (adolescents): 200 youth ( 145 boys & 55 Girls) were given psychosocial counselling, 42 parents (24 mothers & 18 fathers) also got a chance to be counselled together with their children, 2 children also received mental health remedy through psychosocial counselling with the help of doctors specialized in mental problems in Bosaso general hospital. 5. Engaged participants on recreational activities: To enhance physical health, mental health and learning, especially during the non-class hours, P.S.A had a privilege to renovate a football ground, which is now much safer for the children to play on, messages which motivate youth were developed and written on the walls of the stadium, We developed a vibrant schedule for recreational activities, where each individual got involve in different games, which provided captivating moments, these are TV games, Swimming, Drama and Songs, trips outside Bosaso town was part of the program. 6. Mentorship: 95 youth attended mentorship clubs, Methodology used was ‘study circle’ speak-out sessions, on topics selected by youth themselves, Some of them fronted, migration as a topic of discussion, due to the fact that many of their peers in the villages drop out of school and some see migration to far-flung countries as their only hope of a better life, Mentors took the group through many risks that entails illegal migration, in comparison to other options and opportunities open to young people. 7. Media campaign on adolescent issues and violence: On adolescence and violence awareness, three interactive radio programs and one TV talk-show were conducted, the estimated number of people reached is more than 4030, majority being adolescents this includes young boys and girls, 4 articles were also posted in Youth magazine (HIMILO) and the copies were distributed to youth centres, community centres, markets, tea shops and stadiums in Puntland regions, on our facebook page we also posted many articles and photos on the same subjects. Topics and articles in media programs (Radio/TV & Magazine/facebook) were focused on diversion mechanism and involvement in violence, and on trust building between the police and community members, also gaps in regard to challenges that youth faces in Puntland were deliberated upon. 8. Provided Youth grants program to the youth organizations and networks: PSA gave grants to youth organizations, youth centres and youth umbrellas to facilitate different youth initiatives, three organization were the luckiest organizations to benefit from the program; each group trained 20 youth from host community on life skills based education (LSBE), the target youths were those from villages with high cases of gangs groups and other social misfits among its populace. 9. Conduction of First aid training: 25 girls among the beneficiaries were trained on first aid skills and health education; various techniques on how to save lives were learned. The girls were later linked to various medical facilities in Bosaso for more practical sessions and for now the girls are fully trained.
