Khin Shwe first came to the attention of policymakers in the West - TopicsExpress

Khin Shwe first came to the attention of policymakers in the West in the 1990s, when he paid the Washington, DC-based public relations firm Bain and Associates more than $20,000 a month to help burnish the image of Myanmar’s military junta. To return the favour, state media proudly proclaimed him to be a “doctor” with an honorary PhD from “Washington University of the United States”, which turned out to be an unaccredited degree-mill incorporated in Hawaii but operating from a post office box in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Never one to miss a chance to improve his public image, Khin Shwe has more recently joined other junta cronies in attempting to cosy up to opposition leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. -- Aung Zaws Mystery rings through the ages
