Khushwant Singh, Sangat Singh, Harjinder Singh Dilgeer, JS Grewal and the Sikh history Through a message, a friend has asked me what is difference between your Sikh History and that of Khushwant Singhs and Sangat Singhs. As this is a question of everybodys interest, I decided to reply it through my Tome Line. 1. Khushwant Singh published his Sikh History in 1965, i.e. 49 years ago (in fact it was written much earlier); hence he was not able to use those sources which came into light after that, which make his work outdated. His history of the fifth to tenth Guru, banda Singh period, Ranjit Singh period is incomplete. 2. Khushwant Singh has not dealt with many serious issues, may be due to lack of information or his personal motives (he was, after all, a politician). 3. His coverage of the history of post-1978 period does not cover even 10% of the crisis. 4. Sangat Singh has covered the period 1947-1974 in a fine manner. His presentation of Guru Nanak to 1947 is very poor, and, his presentation of post 1978 period is ephemeral. 5. I dont say my book on Sikh history is the best, but, it is much much better than that of the work of Khushwant Singh and Sangat Singh. J S Grewals The Sikhs of the Punjab has just shocked me (though it has been published by Cambridge).
