Kiawe tree fronting Diamond HeadNorman Kaleomokuokanalu Chock has added a photo to the pool: In the foreground is the Kiawe Tree. The Kiawe, as it is known in Hawaiian, is the Mesquite also known as Algarroba or Carob tree. Kiawe means to sway. It was brought over from Peru in South America commencing in a voyage on November 21, 1826 when La Comete left France for Hawaii. Around July 1827, the ship made two stops in Peru. On board the ship would be Hawaii’s first Catholic Priest, Father Alexis Bachelot, who would bring the Kiawe tree to Hawaii. In Hawaii, the wood of the Kiawe is valued for making a high quality firewood and vilified for its ubiquitous sharp thorns which can sometimes grow up to two inches long. In Latin America, its pods are milled to make a sweet flour and recently it has become used by confectionaries as a healthy substitute for chocolate and by local beekeepers for the kiawe honey which is produced mainly on Niihau & Molokai and exported around the world. In the background is Diamond Head, a volcanic tuff cone known to Hawaiians as Lēʻahi, which means the ʻahi tuna because its ridge line resembles the dorsal fin of the ahi. Its English name was given by 19th century British sailors, who mistook beta quartz crystals embedded in the rock for diamonds.
