Kids love to snack. Treats are okay every once in a while but everyday snacks are a great way to give your kids the fruit, vegetables, low fat dairy, and whole grain servings they need. Here are some snacking ideas and tips! Save time by slicing vegetables ahead of time and keep in the fridge with low-fat dips, guacamole, or hummus. Slices of bell peppers, carrots, celery, and zucchini make great options. Make your own trail mix by buying ingredients in bulk and packaging yourself. This cuts down on cost and helps with picky eaters. You could use a variety of nuts and seeds (unsalted is best), dried fruit (w/o added sugar), popcorn, and chocolate chips for something sweet. Fruits such as bananas, oranges, and apples make great on the go snacks since they store easily. Try making your own granola bars! Here is a simple 6 ingredient recipe: 2 ripe bananas (should be spotted) 2 cups rolled oats 1/4 cup pitted chopped dried dates 1/4 cup chopped nuts of your choice (almonds work great) 1 tsp vanilla extract Cinnamon (optional) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9-inch baking pan. Mash bananas in a mixing bowl thoroughly and add vanilla. Stir in oats, dates, and nuts. Pour mixture into baking pan and sprinkle cinnamon if desired. Bake for 30 minutes. Let cool, then slice into 3-inch bars. Recipe makes 9 bars Nutritional information: 158 calories, 4g protein, 3g fat, 32 g carbohydrate, 15 g sugar
