(Kim) I love tea, as most of you know. I am not a coffee drinker, but I live in a state where it is very popular. Actually, hot beverages of all kinds are huge in Alaska. I understand that not everyone is crazy about tea, or even coffee, but I have a gripe about the fact that just about anywhere in the U.S. now a person can find a really good cup of coffee. There are baristas, specialty coffee shops, fresh-roasted beans, and all kinds of coffee gadgets easily available. However, when it comes to obtaining tea in a restaurant or place such as Star Bucks, there is little to no respect given to tea or tea drinkers. Hot water is dispensed from a large tank, where the water is kept at a particular temperature all the time. There is no regard given to how old the water is, what the temperature is, etc. All types of tea are brewed in the same temperature water. I am quick to acknowledge that coffee and tea do not have to be rocket science, and that many people are happy with a Lipton tea bag and tap water, or instant coffee. However, for those who do like to be fussy, the opportunity exists for both coffee and tea lovers to accessorize, get crazy, and pursue really great flavor. I think that most facilities do not give tea the proper respect, and I am not at all happy with Star Bucks since they have switched to using Teavana tea products. Personally, I have not found Teavana products to be good, and I think the Teavana company approach does not invite new tea drinkers into the world of tea. In the scheme of things, this is a ridiculous thing to complain about. However, I do think that coffee and tea should be given equal consideration and merit in public coffee houses and restaurants, and that people who are paying good money should be able to expect equal value for whichever product they choose. I choose to make and drink my tea at home, so that I can decide how fussy I want to be about it on any particular day. It is also a great deal less expensive.
