King Shaka and Heritage Day celebrations in KZN. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu has expressed his appreciation to His Majesty who gave KZN government permission to celebrate King Shaka Day and Heritage Day together. Mchunu was speaking at the celebrations held at KwaDukuza Sports Ground in Stanger today. This is a clear proof of your commitment towards the preservation of our culture and heritage. Importantly you have shown outstanding leadership which will inspire many generations. By combining the two events we have created the opportunity for the people of this province to celebrate our diverse cultures as proud children of a united South Africa. Importantly we are celebrating the contribution of the people of KwaZulu-Natal from all races towards socio-economic development. By all accounts, this province has achieved racial harmony and prosperity through collective efforts by Whites, Indians, Coloureds and Africans. The introduction of the English, Portuguese, Dutch, French and other European cultures as the colonialists landed in Natal signaled the beginning of the formation of the Rainbow Nation as we know it today. In addition, the introduction of the western influence brought in Christianity, while the arrival of Indian indentured labourers introduced the Hindu, Islamic and other faiths from the east. Similarly, the Jewish and many other communities have enriched the spectrum of faiths and religions in this province. Some of these faiths – the Western faiths in particular – and their teachings have influenced our indigenous traditional religions and belief systems, giving rise to a plethora of new religious groupings which now fall under the all-encompassing title of “African Christian Religions”. Indeed, we have been a shining example to the world. In the new democratic order we ushered in 1994, rejecting the notion of groups with specific allocations of special and exclusive rights and resources. We have created an egalitarian society where values identified in the country’s constitution are enjoyed by all. Your Majesty, as we seek to move into the future as One People, One Nation – you remain our source of inspiration. We believe that with your support, this province will continue to edge towards a brighter and prosperous future. We will never forget that, when intolerance threatened the fragile peace that had been achieved after years of political violence; you meticulously brought together leaders from all political parties. You showed determination to instil a new patriotism culture emphasise the importance of putting all South Africans first in anything we do. Indeed, we have made a miraculous progress over the years. Under the new administration we want to create an equal society where values identified in the country’s constitution are enjoyed by all. We are confident that we will succeed in our endeavours because you have always preached mutual respect and tolerance. Today we are gathered to pay tribute to King Shaka, the founder of this nation. We are also gathered here to enlist the spiritual guidance of our forefathers as we intensify our efforts aimed at building a new country where all South Africans live side by side as one people and one nation.
