King defends crown at SNF VIII REGINA — Sam King submitted Winnipeg’s Andy Jack in the second round of their amateur mixed martial arts bout at Saturday Night Fights VIII to defend his Center Ring Promotions 145-pound championship. The Complete Martial Arts and Fitness fighter advanced to 6-0 as an amateur — all stoppages — and announced his intentions to jump to the professional ranks of the sport Saturday at the Turvey Centre. Jason Schiffner, King’s primary training partner, scored a stunning first-round knockout victory over Winnipeg’s Ben Oliviero. With the win, the heavy-handed featherweight improved his record to 2-0, with both impressive victories coming via first-round stoppage under the SNF banner. In the co-main event, Saskatoon’s Alex Delgado-Lopez submitted Albert’s Kim St- Georges in the first round of their 110-pound bout amateur MMA match. Winnipeg’s Jared Funk impressed Queen City fans with a first-round rear-naked choke victory over Prince Albert’s Evan Isbister. Saskatoon’s Rory Ninine defeated a charismatic and game Ian Adams of Prince Albert in a close split-decision. In modified Muay Thai kickboxing action, Regina’s Calvin Harle defeated Jordan Poirier of Alberta via split-decision. Jamie Walker, also of the Queen City, fought to a three-round draw with Alberta’s Thomas Anderson. Tyler Weiran of Saskatoon defeated Regina’s Seamus Clement via split-decision. Winnipeg’s Chelsea Breland, in one of the most entertaining bouts of a great night of fights, beat Albert’s Jamie Droeske via unanimous decision.
