Kingbird Identification 101. Western Kingbird versus Cassins - TopicsExpress

Kingbird Identification 101. Western Kingbird versus Cassins Kingbird. Both species are fairly common in Arizona in the summer months in the right habitats. On Saturday we had the pleasure of seeing both species west of Phoenix at Robbins Butte and also the Arlington Ponds. Both are lingering migrants and will be departing south in the very near future. Note the darkness of the Cassins with the very contrasting white chin. Also note on the Western the 2 outer white tail feathers; the only kingbird with white outer tail feathers. Very different in appearance in these photos, but sometimes in the field can be a bit tricky depending on lightening. Learning the calls is also a big plus as both have very different calls.
