Kings Cave and Blackwaterfoot (D.M) A superb coastal walk - TopicsExpress

Kings Cave and Blackwaterfoot (D.M) A superb coastal walk visiting a series of caves in the sandstone cliffs. Historic Kings Cave is one of several locations in which Robert the Bruce is said to have had his famed encounter with a spider. Although described anti-clockwise, this walk can be completed in either direction. The bus can be used along the A841 to shorten the walk. TERRAIN Beaten earth woodland tracks and potentially rough beach walking followed by good golf course paths. The circuit is completed by a 3.5km road walk. PUBLIC TRANSPORT Public transport users can begin the circuit at Blackwaterfoot. START Car park 3km north of Blackwaterfoot on the A841. Map and directions. Walk Description STAGE 1 The walk as described begins from a car park 3km north of Blackwaterfoot, and finishes by walking along the road from the village back to this. Head along the path in the far right corner of the signposted car-park and proceed around the northern boundary of the forest, soon rewarded with views across the Kilbrannan Sound to the Kintyre peninsula. The path curves left before dropping down a switchback through a cleft in the rock to a gate - pass through this and onto the seashore. Continue to head south; although the path may occasionally disappear simply seek the easiest (or most interesting) path along the rocky foreshore. STAGE 2 The caves eventually begin to appear in the cliffs to the left, Kings Cave is easily identified by the large metal gate protecting the entrance originally intended to protect the Christian and pre-Christian carvings contained within. The gate appears to be kept open for the majority of the time, but its important to avoid damaging the carvings. Leaving the cave, turn left and explore the remainder of the caverns before heading back into the open and continuing south along the beach. STAGE 3 The path passes through a section of bracken, with a signposted path leading off to the left. Ignore this unless you have left your car in the car park in the woods - in which case this path leads back over Torr Righ Beag, though a gate and back to the car park. Otherwise continue along a grassy raised beach with the cliffs of The Doon ahead. Immediately before the cliffs are reached the path heads abruptly uphill, follow this to reach a gate and a grassy path heading right across a field. STAGE 4 Follow this downhill to the stile on the golf course boundary fence. Turn left and proceed along the main path skirting the edge of the golf course as directed to reach the clubhouse and the metaled road into Blackwaterfoot. Finally turn left onto the A841 to begin the 3.5km road walk back to the car park.
