Know your govt, know your history: “Mr Speaker, Sir, on the night of the polling itself, even before all the results were declared, a candidate who had dared to stand against the Government was arrested under the Internal Security Act. And what was his crime? His crime, Mr Speaker, was that he said everyone had the right to learn his mother tongue. Of course, he was protesting then at, what he saw, the measures to kill the Chinese language in Singapore, in Nanyang University for one. That was his crime. He is publicly an anti-Communist. So they could not stick that label on him that he was a Communist. So he was arrested for chauvinism. He languished two years in prison, Mr Speaker, Sir, and for the crime that this Government now advocates - promotion of Mandarin.” ” -JBJ, MP (Anson), 24 Jul 1984
