Know your opponent. Outdated 1960s plans for a SuperPort are back. Robin Silvester says that in the USA Municipal Politics are going to stand in the way of the logical arguement. Thats why he consistantly ignores local and regional government here in Canada. In Richmond the 226 acre Gilmore farm was bought in secret for Port expansion. Other small farms previously owned by the North Fraser Port Authority have had their farm designation changed contrary to Richmond, Metro Vancouver, and ALR agricultural zoning. The Port claims single authority over allowing jet fuel and oil carrying Panamax Suprtankers and dirty coal ships on the Fraser River and demands removal of the Massey Tunnel and a new bridge to get them up river; all to provide infrastructure for SuperPort expansion. Decades ago I presented a brief to Richmond Council recommending a land swap with the federal government so the former Richmond owned landfill could be developed as a port. Without that land the port couldnt have happened. Do I feel betrayed? Absolutely! Sometimes we should be more careful what we wish for.
