Knowing that some of my friends and family have children in public schools, and some even teach in such schools, I try not to pick on public schools too much. But some get defensive even when I carefully word a statement to avoid triggering such concerns. But Id like you who get all defensive about schools-as-we-know-them to ask yourself a few simple questions - outside of schools and prisons, is there any other place where you have to ask permission to pee? Very few of us work on assembly lines nowadays. Is there any other institution where every minute of every day is so completely and minutely under somebody elses control?
