Knowing when you shouldnt exercise! Do you exercise when you are sick and should you? One of the old rules of thumb back in the day was- if its below your head then its NO EXERCISE for example if you can feel it in your chest you shouldnt exercise- possible chest infection. What you actually need to do is listen to your own body. Your body is naturally trying to make antibodies to fight off either a viral or bacterial infection so you need to be resting for this to happen. If you have been up all night with your kids or are pregnant and wake up with the first signs of a cold then you may be better to actually take the day off rest, take a few extra Vitamin C tablets, hydrate and see how you feel the next day. If you are worse the following day then you need to rest but you could wake up feeling fine and enjoy an easy training session because you rested when you should have and listened to your body! Exercising when your body is tired and fighting a small cold could be too much for a sleep deprived and or pregnant body to cope with and you can make things much worse. Another warning sign is if you actually start to cough when you are working out which means the intensity is too hard, if you reduce your intensity and you are still coughing then you should not be training.
