Known as the HIVBr18, the vaccine against the virus that causes - TopicsExpress

Known as the HIVBr18, the vaccine against the virus that causes AIDS was developed and patented by a team from the Medicine Faculty of the University of Sao Paulo, the Sao Paulo state Research Foundation (FAPESP) said. The scientists said that, at its current stage of development, the vaccine would not totally eliminate the virus from its host but the vaccine would allow a viral load low enough that the infected host will neither develop an immunodeficiency nor transmit the virus. The foundation said the rhesus monkey trials are expected to last two years. Rhesus monkeys may play a key role in the development of a vaccine for HIV/AIDS because of the great many immunological and hematological similarities they share with humans. They are capable of developing full blown AIDS and one the blood group systems used in humans is called the rhesus blood group system (Rh) because it was discovered in rhesus monkeys (the system is similar to more familiar AOB system). The whole reason this works is because of our shared evolutionary history! Miriana Mariussi
