Knox County Public Library will present the second program in the series “Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle” with a showing of the film, “The Loving Story,” beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the main building. “The Loving Story” is a documentary about Richard and Mildred Loving who in 1958 in Virginia were arrested for being married. Marriage between people of different races was illegal in Virginia at that time. While laws like this had existed in most states since the 17th century, the Lovings never expected to be awakened in their bedroom in the middle of the night and arrested. Through obscure filmed interviews and photographs for Life magazine, the film brings to life the story of the couples marriage and the legal battle that followed. The legal battle starts when Mildred Loving writes a letter to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. Vanessa Purdom, program chair of the Vincennes University Paralegal Program within the Department of Law & Safety, will facilitate the discussion following a brief screening of “The Loving Story” documentary. Purdom’s knowledge of the legal system and her personal experiences will help those attending the program to understand this landmark case. Those attending are encouraged to share their experiences with interracial marriage and families. The program is free and open to the public. No reservations are required. Refreshments will be served. For more information contact Judy Kratzner at 812-886-4380.
