Krauthammer: Hike The Gas Tax And Return Funds To Consumer. In his column for the Washington Post (1/9), Charles Krauthammer writes that he has been advocating a “major tax on petroleum” for 32 years. He says that while some in Congress are considering a 10- or 20-cent increase in the Federal gas tax, he prefers $1 a gallon. However, “the proceeds should not be spent by, or even entrusted to, the government,” but should instead be “immediately and entirely returned to the consumer by means of a cut in the Social Security tax.” Krauthammer argues that this method will “reduce the disincentive for work (the Social Security tax) and to increase the disincentive to consume gasoline.” Speaker Boehner Doubtful Of Gas Tax Increase. Reuters (1/9, Cornwell) reports House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), stated that he doubts enough Republicans will support a raise in the gas tax. However, Boehner did acknowledge that US infrastructure needed more funding and that lawmakers were looking a number a ways to solve the problem.
