Her training emphasizes disease prevention, reduction of health risks, and thorough patient education. Pediatric Emergency Room and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Hackensack Hospital employs Nurse Practitioners. What do PNPs do? Nurse practitioners (also referred to as advanced practice nurses, or APNs) have a masters degree in nursing (MS or MSN) and board certification in their specialty. For example, a pediatric NP has advanced education, skills, and training in caring for infants, children, and teens. PNPs offer a variety of services including: • Provide health maintenance care for children, including well child examinations, order medical tests • Perform routine developmental screenings • Diagnose and treat common childhood illnesses, write prescriptions. • Provide anticipatory guidance regarding common child health concerns • Provide childhood immunizations • Perform school physicals What makes a Nurse Practitioner different from a physician? NPs maintain close working relationships with doctors and consult them as needed. Although doctors have additional training to help patients deal with complex medical problems, many people feel that NPs spend more time with their patients. Experts who study NPs report that their training emphasizes disease prevention, reduction of health risks, and thorough patient education.
