In ancient and medieval times in some socities it was illegal to read and write. In medieval Christain France you could be burnt as a heretic if church knew that you could read and write. Only after dissolution of monasteries in Tudor England by Henry VIII could ordinary citizens learn to read legally. Though women in Britain won the vote in 1920 it was not until 1948 that a woman doctor could qualify in medicine in England. Being able to draw a visual picture in many cases is the only way that children and patients who have been abused and raped are able to get there message across because they are so traumatized that they cannot express themselves in words. It is a technique used by many psychologists and criminologists. If you are a teacher and see strange drawings drawn often by a withdrawn learner do not ignore the message contact your social services duty officer (safeguarding and protection of vulnerable people is the duty of all citizens ; it is a crime against humanity in some countries if you ignore the plea)
