Kuchisake onna This is another favorite of mine (kitsune is still #1 though lol). Kuchisake Onna is one fine fox that is until she tears off her iconic surgeon mask to reveal a mouth slit from ear to ear. This feudal era myth is an example of a superstition that has evolved over the years. The original story tells of a promiscuous wife who gets caught cheating on her samurai boyfriend. Enraged he kills her lover and then cuts her mouth ear to ear shouting “Who would love you looking like this!”. The story then goes that she transformed into a yokai that would appear on dark misty nights and would inflict the same injury she had on her victims! This feudal story has aged very well and is now a very popular playground superstition. The Kuchisake Onna has different powers in different prefectures such as being able to running faster to a sports car to owning one. The way she became disfigured also changed and again depending on where you go in Japan some will say she had a botched plastic surgery, others that she was raped by a biker gang and disfigured and left to die. However, one thing that stays the same is she appears to her victims wearing a trench coat and donning a surgical mask and asks her victims the question “Watashi kirei?” (am I beautiful?). Answer yes and she will tear off her mask and ask “Kore demo!?” (what about now?!). Answer no and she will kill you where you stand! Say yes and she will let you go . . . lol just kidding say yes and she will still kill you hahahaha. The only way to escape a horrific fate is to either say she looks soso when she first asks and then run or give her bekko ame (Japanese hard candy) and run!
