Kulaura, the largest upazila of Maulvibazar zila in respect of both area and population, came into existence in 1922 as thana. Nothing is definitely known about the origin of the upazila name. It is said that this area was famous for special type of bamboo product locally know as Kula (winnowing fan in English). It is believed that once upon a time a wizard came to this area flying with the help of winnowing fans tied to his arms. In consequence of which the area became known as Kulaura. Kulaura upazila occupies an area of 679.25 sq. km. including 116.25 sq. km. including forest area. It is located between 24°20´ and 24°40´ north latitudes and between 91°54´ and 92°14´ east longitudes. The upazila is bounded on the north by Barlekha and Fenchuganj upazilas, on the east and on the south by India and on the west by Rajnagar and Kamalganj upazilas. Kulaura upazila consists of 1 Paurashava, 9 wards, 26 mahallahs, 16 unions, 175 mauzas and 547 villages. The average population of each ward, mahallah, union, mauza and villages are 2326, 805, 23435, 2143 and 685 respectively.
