Kupwara, July 20: Hundreds of people paid rich tributes to teenage girl Tabinda Gani on her 7th death anniversary today. The victim was brutally raped and murdered at Langate Handwara on July 20, 2007. Residents of Handwara, Langate and other adjoining areas visited Batpora and offered Fateh-a-Khawani at ancestral graveyard of 14-year old Tabinda. A congregational prayer was also offered in local Masjid to pay homage to Tabinda, who was raped and murdered by 4 persons, including two non locals, on this day seven years ago. “We are proud of Tabinda. She was a brave girl and died while protecting her honor. You can judge her bravery from the fact that she resisted the rape and fought with them at the eleventh hour of her life and even bruised them with her nails which later helped in identification of the accused. Kashmirirs can’t forget Tabinda Gani and horrible memories of her rape and murder," locals said. The gruesome incident had sent shock waves across Kashmir and had triggered spontaneous protests. Following the public outcry police had arrested four accused, including two non-locals, and had filed a chalan against them. The mood in her ancestral village was grim and the villagers were demanding death penalty for the accused “We demand nothing less than death sentence for the accused. The crime they committed is barbaric and rarest of the rare in the history of the Kashmir. There are clinching evidence against them. The accused had confessed before the police that they had committed crime.The FSL,DNA and other medical evidence have already indicted the four accused. It is now for the court to decide the quantum of punishment keeping in mind the gruesome crime they committed,” said Muhammad Iqbal Shah brother of the victim. “In the recent Delhi gang rape-incident, Government of India acted swiftly and constituted a fast track court for speedy trial of the case but in equally horrible rape and murder case of 2007 in Kashmir, it took more than 7 years to record the statements of witnesses. You can yourself judge the speed of the trial” he added.
