FEUER CITY ATTORNEY POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT INVESTIGATOR I LOS ANGELES WORLD AIRPORTS DIVISION PROPRIETARY & RISK MANAGEMENT BRANCH ANNUAL SALARY: $54,580 to $67,818 OPENING: The Office of the City Attorney is currently accepting applications for an Investigator I at the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) – Workers’ Compensation Section of the Proprietary & Risk Management Branch. SECTION: The LAWA - Workers’ Compensation Section is responsible for defending the City in all claims litigated before the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board. The Appeals Board is a state agency which has exclusive jurisdiction over disputed employee claims to benefits for injuries arising out of employment. The LAWA - Workers’ Compensation Section is located at the Los Angeles International Airport, 1 World Way, Room 104, Los Angeles. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The responsibilities of this position include the following: Conducting complex interviews of witnesses and claimants; Writing detailed reports of interviews; Gathering evidence and information for claims and law suits filed against the City, specifically the Los Angeles World Airports; Obtaining court documents; Handling a high volume of assignments from the attorneys, adjusters and risk management staff; Preparing clear written reports and witness statements and meeting strict deadlines; Conducting both moving and stationary surveillance using video equipment, taking photographs, and drawing scale diagrams; Serving subpoenas and obtaining public records, medical records or evidence for use by Workers’ Compensation attorneys; and The investigator will operate a vehicle and conduct field assignments (i.e., surveillance, subrosa) in and out of state. Applicants must be proficient in Microsoft Word. Strong interpersonal skills are required as the investigator needs to interact with department staff as well as the risk management team. The selected applicant should be self-motivated, a quick learner, exercise independent judgment, and work with minimum supervision. The applicant should have excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work well with other employees of this office and personnel from other agencies. Reliable attendance and punctuality is mandatory. Applicants must be able to lift boxes (up to 25 lbs). The hours for this position are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Mondaythrough Friday, however, flexibility is required as surveillance and subrosa may include weekends and odd hours. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Desired qualifications are: Experience in civil claims investigation and evaluation; Knowledge of civil investigation procedures and evidence rules and requirements; Experience in evaluating property damage or personal injury matters; Knowledge of workers’ compensation laws; and Ability to competently testify in court. PROBATION: Appointment to this exempt position (non Civil-Service) will be subject to a one (1) year probationary period as required by Section 1050 of the City Charter. Successful completion of the one (1) year probationary period will result in tenure with the office.
