LABELING WIN! Home Depot Labels Neonic-treated Plants by Sharon Selvaggio Healthy Wildlife & Water Program Director At last, a labeling victory! Thanks to the efforts of NCAP supports in Eugene, Oregon and pollinator advocates across the country, labeling practices are now being implemented at Home Depot. After concerned community members demonstrated at its stores on Valentine’s Day in 2014, Home Depot agreed to label neonicotinoid-treated plants available for purchase in its stores. Labels are now present on plants for sale. The labels imply a positive benefit for the plants and make no reference to scientific documentation that neonics are contributing to honeybee and native bee declines. Dont be fooled! In addition, neonicotinoids were identified as the cause in several recent mass bee die-offs, including the June 2013 event that killed 50,000 bees in a Target parking lot in Wilsonville, Oregon. Lets work together to make sure our communities know the truth about neonics and what this label really means. We urge NCAP supporters whenever possible to buy plants that are labeled organic to ensure that no toxic pesticides were used in its production. When you visit nurseries this spring, please ask if they have labeled neonic-treated plants and seeds. We have also provided the graphic below, with some additional questions to reference when speaking with nursery staff.
