LAKE KAPNAROK LAND TASKFORCE REJECTED By #BCNcorrespondent The residents of Lake Kamnarok Game Reserve in Baringo County have rejected the taskforce formed by the county government to solve the boundary issue in the area that has been persistent for many years. The taskforce formed by the governor Benjamin Cheboi on May 19th 2014, was to provide technical advice to the committee to settle the boundary dispute between the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) and the community. Mr. Geofrey Kulei, a resident of L. Kapnarok said they will never agree on the taskforce formed by the governor and should be disbanded. Mr. Kulei wondered why the local leaders including the governor and the area member of parliament have not addressed them over the issue yet they want to bring a taskforce to settle the issue. The resident noted that the governor himself would have addressed them first one on one before forming the taskforce noting that they will not trust the committee on grounds that they were not elected in a transparent manner. Another resident, Mr Hosea Kieng appreciated the effort by the county Government to replenish the lake but blamed the leaders from Baringo for keeping quiet on the issue that is affecting them after being voted in. He called on them to come in and help them get a solution The tussle between more than 2,000 residents bordering the reserve and the defunct Baringo County Council and Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) did nothing but worsened the situation with the locals vowing not to move out of the reserve until they are given alternative land. The tussle is further worsened by the seismic study done by Tullow oil company to establish the possibility of presence of oil which has left the residence with anxiety over whether they are going to get the benefits of the product of their ancestral land and also see their fate hanging in the balance if they are vacated from the location. Member of the taskforce are: Joseph Kiptala (Barwesa), Reuben Chepkonga (Konoo), Samson Katibel (Katibel), Musa Sumukwo (Kaptilomwo), Johana Chepkonga (Keturwo), Francis Cherop (Muchukwo), Joshua Chelanga (Kabuskei), representative from County ministry of Tourism , Three chiefs, Ministry of Environment, Sub county administrator, Ward administrator, Kenya Wild Life Service, Kenya Forest Service, a professional and two women. The area MCA would be an ex-official member. Read more: county-411/baringonews/countynews/1029-taskforce-formed-to-settle-kamnarok-boundary-dispute
