A regular program of physical activity is important for the health of the body, and thousands of people would look and feel better if they kept their muscles in tone. Those who are still good athletes when they are in their forties keep in shape by carrying out a demanding schedule of running and calisthenics. Most of us would do well to spend some time each day developing our stamina. The same need for exercise exists in relation to the mind. Bill Gothard, whose ministry has been a blessing to thousands, was just an average student until he began to develop his mental powers by spending many hours each week in memorization. Of more importance than a regimen of training for either the body or the mind, however, is a discipline that involves the spirit. Paul told young Timothy, “…exercise thyself rather unto godliness” (1 Timothy 4:7). In this admonition he utilized a Greek term from which we derive our word “gymnasium.” The apostle acknowledged that bodily exercise had some merit, but he declared that striving to live for the Lord pays even greater dividends. Let’s not overlook the value of keeping physically and mentally fit, but above all let’s train ourselves for godly living! This requires as much conscious effort as jogging or memorization. It means a daily program of prayer and Bible reading and calls for self-discipline, witnessing, and acts of loving service which may cost us time and money. But the rewards are great, both in this world and in the world to come. ---Herbert Vander Lugt **************** Read daily your Bible, if you would be strong To witness for Jesus and overcome wrong. The Author, the Book, they ever abide; But if you neglect them, you’ll surely backslide. -----Annon.
