LANG’OL PARISH MARKET OPERATES WITHOUT A FUNCTIONAL LATRINE. The residents of Langol parish in Alero sub-county are in danger of an epidemic outbreak following the absence of a functioning latrine in the parish market that accommodates over 500 people daily. The market, situated around 13 kilometers from Gulu town, along Alero road was constructed way back in 1950s but had been functioning without a latrine ever since, the users would ease themselves at nearby homes but due to the swelling number of clients at the market, the absence of latrines began to bite hard after nearby residences barred people from accessing their latrines. The matter was brought to the attention of Gulu fm by a concerned resident, Okwera Richard, who also doubles as the market chairman after petitioning Alero sub-county authorities in vain for the construction of a pit latrine. He fears that with the current heavy rains and reported cases of deadly Marburg outbreak, the community risks facing an epidemic due to lack of a latrine and a rubbish pit at the market. Anyoda Florence one of the market vendors could not hide her fears following the lack of a proper latrine. Orach Stephen the market due collector believe that the community’s step is one in the right direction since the sub-county authorities have already disappointed them. According to Okumu Simon Peter, the parish chief for Oduku parish where the market is situated, Alero sub county authorities had been tendering the market at 70.000 sh per month since its inception but have completely failed to provide a latrine, which has prompted the community to withdraw the tender and take over the administration of the market. This has resulted into a minor structure that the community has resolved to raise for a pit latrine, but the project is moving at a snail pace.
