(Press Trust of India) New Delhi: J Jayalalithaa has been granted bail by the Supreme Court in a corruption case on medical grounds. The former Tamil Nadu chief minister has been in a Bangalore jail for three weeks after she was convicted and sentenced to four years in prison by trial court. Here are the latest developments: The Supreme Court while granting bail today, said the AIADMK chief must advise her partys workers to remain calm and behave decorously. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has complained that following Ms Jayalalithaas conviction, her followers allegedly made threats and damaged property in violent protests.The top court has directed Ms Jayalalithaas lawyers to ready all documents within two months to facilitate an early disposal of her appeal in the Karnataka High Court against her sentence. It said it would on December 18, ask the High Court to decide on the case within three months of that date. The court said that if the papers were not filed by then, bail would be canceled. Ms Jayalalithaas lawyer, constitutional expert Fali Nariman assured the court that they would ready documents within six weeks and would ask for speedy disposal of her appeal.Ms Jayalalithaa is expected to be released from jail today or early tomorrow, if paperwork is not completed. (Read more...)On September 27, a special court in Bangalore convicted Ms Jayalalithaa after finding her guilty of amassing wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income during her first tenure as chief minister from 1991 to 1996. She then moved the Supreme Court seeking bail and asking it to suspend her sentence. The Supreme Court has stayed a fine of Rs 100 crore imposed on her by the trial court till the High Court decides on her appeal. It also granted bail to three others accused in the case, including Ms Jayalalithaas close friend Sasikala Natarajan.The 66-year-old had sought bail on account of her age and health - she said she suffers from diabetes, hypertension, cellulitis and other ailments.While seeking bail Ms Jayalalithaa offered in court today that she would confine herself to her Chennai home for the next two to three months, but the court said it would lay no such condition. Ms Jayalalithaas conviction meant she was disqualified as a legislator in accordance with a Supreme Court ruling and had to step down as chief minister.
