LAUNCH OF MADE IN GRENADA EXPO AND BUY LOCAL FIRST CAMPAIGN ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA Monday, November 25, 2013: The Ministry of Economic Development Planning Trade and Cooperatives will launch its MADE IN GRENADA EXPO and BUY LOCAL FIRST campaigns, tomorrow, Tuesday November 26th, 2013. The launch will take the form of a Press Conference at the Ministry of Works Conference Room, Botanical Gardens, St. George’s, at 11:00 am. MADE IN GRENADA EXPO The Ministry of Economic Development, Planning, Trade and Cooperatives is partnering with Private Sector Agencies and Business Support Organizations to put a MADE IN GRENADA EXPO aimed at promoting the manufacturing Sector. This Expo is carded for February 7th – 8th 2014 and will showcase all locally produced goods ranging from jams and jellies to paints. The purpose of the Expo is to give manufacturers and producers, both large and small, an opportunity to promote their products, earn additional income and get valuable feedback from consumers, while at the same time enhancing their capabilities and skills. Leading up to the Expo will be a number of training sessions. The manufacturers will be divided by sector and training will be held for every sector identified. The Bureau of Standards has already started training with the Spice Producers in proper packaging technique. The Grenada Industrial Development Cooperation will also be offering training in Business Techniques, Business Plan Development and the Importance of Proper Record Keeping. Manufacturers will also be exposed to topics such as Customer Relations, Sales Technique and Trade Fair Management. At the end of the training processors should be producing a higher quality, more appealing and commercially competitive products for display at the EXPO. BUY LOCAL FIRST CAMPAIGN As the Grenadian economy continues to suffer from depressed economic conditions influenced by the continued slowdown in international economies, a low productivity base and high import bill, the Grenada Private Sector Working Group, made up of the Ministry of Trade, the Grenada Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Private Sector Representatives and the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA)Unit, will embarked on a BUY LOCAL FIRST campaign as a response to a call from the Government, Private Sector and citizenry to boost the local economy. The main objectives of the BUY LOCAL CAMPAIGN FIRST are to: · Spur local consumption; · Generate much needed income especially for the rural economies; · Encourage manufacturing companies to grow and become export oriented; and · Improve Food Security Campaigns, such as this one, have been noted for their ability to enhance the recirculation of money within local communities and the economy; generate employment; and assist with poverty reduction among others. This campaign will be done in phases. Phase I (one) of the campaign will be from November 26th, 2013 to February 2014. This initial phase will seek to introduce the concept to the public with advertisements encouraging them to support the initiative through buying local products. As part of this phase, supermarkets and mini marts will be the outlets identified for such a campaign through the use of shelf talkers and stickers. Details on the remaining phases will be given in due course These two initiatives of the Ministry of Economic Development, Planning, Trade and Cooperatives are in keeping with Government’s policy to provide training and exposures for our manufacturing sector to enable them to be more competitive on the local and international markets. The Minister responsible for Trade, Hon Oliver Joseph, will officially launch both initiatives with a Press Conference on Tuesday 26th November 2013 at the Ministry of Works Conference room, Ministerial Complex, Botanical Garden at 11.00 am.
