LBJ is my favorite president of all time -- not just because of his awesome cowboy hat and his Texas roots. Heres why: I used to work a low-wage job with subpar health insurance -- our premiums rose every year by enormous amounts. I needed my one-year-old daughter to be able to see a doctor without worrying about breaking the bank. We applied for supplemental Medicaid for children, and within a few weeks we experienced a whole new level of care. Benefits covered the entire doctors visit. Prescriptions were fully covered, so we no longer had to skip out on half our groceries to pay for medicine. And when our daughter got a serious respiratory infection, Medicaid paid for an in-home breathing machine so we didnt have to see a doctor for every 10-minute treatment. Today marks 49 years since President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicaid into law. And now, Republicans like Rick Perry and Greg Abbott are refusing to accept the Medicaid expansion, denying affordable health care to more than a million low-income Texans. Battleground Texas is working to elect Democrats who wont ignore no-brainers like Medicaid expansion -- can you pitch in $3 or more in the hopes of a healthier future for Texas families like mine? Medicaid was a lifesaver for us, alleviating ridiculous amounts of pointless stress. When I think about those other families in worse situations than mine, I dont know how they stay afloat.
